Dear Hitesh and Chandrashekar,

Even though you trust me very much, please don't reveal your mobile phone numbers in public like this. That's always dangerous (I've edited your comment and replaced them with 'X's so no problems).

I don't know how came two comments are placed on the same post with different mobile numbers and different names of same problem and same description. I guess it's either one of you who's so desperate to find the mobile that had you to post in my blog with two different names. Anyways, thinking you're a genuine reader of The Gadget Freak, I'm answering you here.

First of all, the software that's being discussed in this post is not yet out for commercial release. So, that won't help you now.

But, you can do two things. One is, you can ask the Idea company to block your SIM Card. The next one is asking them to track down your mobile. For the first one, you just need to provide a letter. For the second one, you need to file a Case with local Police Station and then with their help try to locate the phone if you remember the IMEI number.

For all those who doesn't know their IMEI Number, there is two ways of finding it. If you have the handset, type *#06# and your IMEI Number is immediately displayed. If you don't have the handset as in your case, please find your original bill where they will mention the IMEI Number.

My mobile was robbed on 23/7/2007 at the CBS Stand at Nasik while entering a crowded bus at around 21.15 hrs. This mobile was very precious for me as it has lots of photos, videos, voice recodings and sms's which were very personal and close to my heart. I hope some way you help me to get the mobile back. Hi Edmund D'Silva,

First of all, please try to understand that Gadget Freak can only help people by giving answers to their questions. We can never give services like finding stolen mobiles. All we can give is the ways to find mobiles.

You've done the right thing by filing an FIR, but go to your service provider and then show them the FIR and ask them to trace the mobile. If the thief isn't using your SIM card, then you should go to Nokia people to trace or just block your mobile by the IMEI number. As the police dosen't take mobile theft seriously, it's least chance to get back your mobile. So, at least make it unusable by the thief by blocking the IMEI number.

And lastly, I recommend not to poast as comments these kinds of personal questions which will expose you. We've GadgetFreak Answers just for you all. Send your questions to answers@thegadgetfreak.info and we will answer them as posts after eliminating your personal details.

You're really embarrassing me. We The Gadget Freak never mentioned that we offer any kind of stolen mobile finding service. Whoever informed you like that has been greatly misinformed. I'm really sorry, but I have to ask you to read the Post you're commenting on before commenting on the same. This post talks about a software that can help find your stolen mobile. It never talks about any other service offerings. This software is not yet out in market (as to my knowledge). If it's out, we will publish the software here so that you can get one and install in your future mobile and prevent it from stolen.

As of now, please follow up with your Police Case along with your Service Provider. There is simply nothing we can do to help you.

Dear Shrinivasan,
My brand new Nokia N72 was stolen from my college bag last week. As per your suggestions in your blog i immediately lodged an FIR and also contacted my Network provider for tracing my device...thank you for all this info.
i read somewhere in one of your replies that the IMEI no of the phone can be blocked..i need to ask you whether after blocking the IMEI no. would the network provider / police be still able to trace the device?? or will this be the end of my hope to find my cell?? please help. Thanks

Dear Paul,
Its great to see many innovative things coming up and its greater to see that u guys are making things happen.........
I need to know a small thing....
My counsin went missing and all efforts to trace him went in vain.... he was carrying a mobile and i have the IMEI number ..... till now the police has not tried this avenue of tracking his cell..... as u know in our indian family we youngster are not supposed to voice when the elders are there..... so now i wish to take help of a Private detective. So i would just like to know how far this tracking down through IMI works and how long it may take..... i'm asking this cos i just wanna be sure before the PDs take the case just for a sake of hefty bill..... u know what i mean......

Dear Deepak,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Anyway, as far as I know, mobile tracking in India has not yet reached the Private Detectives. Some influential highly skilled detectives can do it with some help from internal Police personnel.

However, I strongly recommend you to aproach a Detective and find out whether they can do it. But their charges may be heavy.

For those asking constantly to help them find their lost Phones, the following is my answer:

I CAN'T FIND THE LOST PHONES. You should try the following when your mobile is lost:

1. You must ask the mobile connection provider to block your SIM Card.
2. Ask them to track down your mobile using IMEI Number.
